Historic Photo Collection
From the Brown Brothers Photo Archive file marked "Amundsen".
Roald Amundsen was a Norwegian explorer during the Heroic Age of Antarctic Exploration. He led the first expedition to successfully cross the Northwest Passage from 1903 to 1906 in the sloop Gjoa. Following that success he was the first to lead a team to the South Pole in 1911. In May of 1926 he flew an airship across the North Pole - the first verified to do so. While flying a rescue mission in 1928 for the crashed airship Italia over the arctic he went missing. His remains were never found.
