Historical Negative Collection
Negative from the Brown Brothers Photo Archive file marked "Hudson-Fulton".
Collection of images showing the elaborate celebration of the 100th anniversary of the Fulton paddlewheel steamship and the 300th anniversary of Henry Hudson's discovery of the Hudson River. The celebration was organized by a group of wealthy and influential New Yorkers including J. P. Morgan and Andrew Carnegie and spotlighted the many highlights of New York City and its people. There were parades, illuminated statues and ships and an extravagant display of fireworks over the river. Included in the celebration was a dirigible race that started at Grants Tomb and was to end in Albany. The winner would claim a 10,000 prize. The two competitors were Thomas Baldwin and George Tomlinson but neither would finish the race due to mechanical failures. These are rare images of the race showing the launch of Baldwin's dirigible and it lifting off into the distance.
We have other similar glass plate negatives, see our other auctions.
