Historical Negative Collection
Rare collection of images of the Fort George Amusement Park located in the neighborhoods of Washington Heights in upper Manhattan. Considered the "Coney Island of Harlem" the park was founded by Hollywood producer Joseph Schenk who later partnered with Marcus Loew to add a vaudeville stage and open Paradise Park. During its heyday the park had 3 roller coasters, 3 carousels, 2 Ferris wheels and a boat ride. Two of the roller coasters were developed by William Mangles of Coney Island fame. Despite the benefits provided to the residents of Washington Heights the park was closed in 1914 after a series of fires and never rebuilt due to the noise and high crime of the park. Only one ride survived the fires and demolition - Carousel #15 which is displayed at Palisades Center Mall.
Beautiful image of 2 people enjoying the view from the top of the Ferris Wheel.
